Cloud Computing
Some web sites that I have found that offer cloud computing and/or online storage
| Site name | Notes |
|---|---|
| Dropbox | start w/ 2GB free, can get up to 3GB free |
| eyeOS | unspecified storage limit (at least, I haven't found it yet). You can download the software and set up your own server. |
| g.ho.st | Shutting down the free service March 15 2010, focusing on large companies |
| Glide OS | 30 GB |
| Startforce | 5 GB, desktop replacement |
| Zoho | 1 GB |
| Zumo Drive | 2GB free |
Run your own cloud
Some of the software used to run cloud computing web sites is Open Source. As a result, you can download it and run your own "cloud". Why would you want to do that, you ask? Some reasons that occur to me include:
- Have the same software on multiple desktops without having to install and maintain it on multiple computers.
- Easy collaboration - cloud computing packages usually have tools built in for sharing files and other information.
- Alternatives to expensive commercial software when you use Open Source products.
- Greater control over offerings than when you use the version hosted by another company.
Offerings that I have found so far:
- EyeOS (see the link above). Provides office suite software (word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation manager). Version 2 is in beta (testing) mode as of this writing (March 2010), and I do not recommend using it; go to the older versions and download version 1.9.
- Customer Relations Management from SugarCRM is available both as a commercial product and an Open Source version. Helps an organization track sales, marketing projects, leads, and other customer-related items and projects.
