Run your own cloud

Some of the software used to run cloud computing web sites is Open Source. As a result, you can download it and run your own "cloud". Why would you want to do that, you ask? Some reasons that occur to me include:

  • Have the same software on multiple desktops without having to install and maintain it on multiple computers.
  • Easy collaboration - cloud computing packages usually have tools built in for sharing files and other information.
  • Alternatives to expensive commercial software when you use Open Source products.
  • Greater control over offerings than when you use the version hosted by another company.

Offerings that I have found so far:

  • EyeOS (see the link above). Provides office suite software (word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation manager). Version 2 is in beta (testing) mode as of this writing (March 2010), and I do not recommend using it; go to the older versions and download version 1.9.
  • Customer Relations Management from SugarCRM is available both as a commercial product and an Open Source version. Helps an organization track sales, marketing projects, leads, and other customer-related items and projects.
